In a home or building, there are numerous potential sources of formaldehyde, but building products typically account for a significant portion of the concentration. Recent renovations or the introduction of new materials into the home are likely to increase formaldehyde levels.
Sources of Formaldehyde:
Exposure to formaldehyde can have varying health effects on an individual. Acute exposure may cause irritation of the throat, nose, eyes, and skin, potentially exacerbating asthma symptoms and other respiratory illnesses. Long-term or chronic exposure may lead to chronic runny nose, chronic bronchitis, and obstructive lung disease. In 2004, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) reclassified formaldehyde from “probably carcinogenic to humans” to “carcinogenic to humans” with regard to nasopharyngeal cancer. Because many factors contribute to the development of cancer, there is no definitive “safe level” of exposure. Limiting exposure is the best way to reduce the risk of cancer.
Our company employs the most advanced and trusted air testing and sampling methods to identify the sources and levels of formaldehyde in commercial buildings and residential homes.
